Prime Minister Dr Robert Abela officially inaugurated the Verdala Wellness Hotel – AX Privilege, set within the wider Verdala destination that brings together the 5-star wellness hotel and the exclusive residences at Verdala Terraces. The Prime Minister, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Dr Ian Borg, toured the completed destination as AX Group Chairman Angelo Xuereb, Directors Claire Xuereb and Denise Xuereb, and Group CEO Michael Warrington outlined the vision and extensive work behind the project.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the scale of the €80 million investment, noting that projects of this calibre reinforce Malta’s tourism sector at a time of continued, sustainable growth. He added that the opening of a destination of this standard demonstrates ongoing confidence in Malta’s commitment to high-end hospitality and quality residential developments.
Present for the occasion were the Chairman and CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, Mr Charles Mangion and Mr Carlo Micallef, together with the Mayor of Rabat, Mr Sandro Craus. The official delegation was greeted by the Board of Directors of AX Group and AX Real Estate, as well as senior management and employees involved in the Verdala project.
The Verdala destination represents a major undertaking for AX Group, rooted in a long-term vision to restore and elevate a site that had once played a central role in the Rabat community. Replacing the former Grand Hotel Verdala required a development that respected its surroundings while delivering significant improvements for residents, guests and the locality. The scale and complexity of the site demanded specialised engineering methods, extensive coordination and a clear focus on quality over quantity.
Commenting on the milestone, Mr Angelo Xuereb, Chairman of AX Group, stated, “Today, Verdala stands as a completed destination: the Verdala Terraces, exclusive residences that set a benchmark for luxury living in Malta, and the Verdala Wellness Hotel, the first of its kind on the island, featuring the V Spa with its extensive wellness facilities and treatments. It is a very fitting milestone in the year where we celebrate AX Group’s 50th anniversary.”
The positive response from residents, guests and the wider community reflects the significance of this transformation. The Prime Minister emphasised that Verdala represents a flagship project not only for AX Group but for Malta itself, underscoring the nation’s ambition to deliver destinations of lasting quality. The development has replaced what once stood here while bringing renewed activity to this part of Rabat and restoring value to a site that had long remained dormant.
